CSA & cUL Certified. Here's What it Means.
The cUL mark is the Canadian equivalent of UL certification — issued through Underwriters Laboratories and recognized across all Canadian provinces as proof that a product meets the rigorous standards set by the CSA (Canadian Standards Association). A cUL listing carries full CSA equivalency and satisfies the same legal requirements.
A cUL listing confirms that Nightglow's power supplies have been independently tested and evaluated to meet Canadian electrical safety standards, including CSA C22.2. The product has been assessed for construction quality, electrical performance, thermal behaviour under load, dielectric strength, and protection against fault conditions. This is not a self-declared standard — it is third-party verification by one of North America's most respected testing bodies.
Nightglow's power supplies are tested and certified to:
- UL 60950-1 Information Technology Equipment — Safety, Part 1: General Requirements
- CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1-07Information Technology Equipment — Safety, Part 1: General Requirements(CSA Edition)
These are the exact standards listed on Nightglow's certification documentation. The CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1-07 designation is the Canadian national standard — identical in technical scope to UL 60950-1 but issued under CSA authority, making our products fully compliant for Canadian installation and insurance requirements.
The Real Cost of Uncertified Products
-
1. Rejection at Installation
Licensed electricians and contractors are legally obligated to refuse uncertified electrical products. Many jurisdictions require proof of certification before a permit is issued. An uncertified power supply can halt an entire project, triggering costly delays, re-ordering, and labour charges — all before a single fixture is turned on.
-
2. Insurance Becomes Void
If damage occurs — whether from a short circuit, overheating, or electrical fault, insurance providers will investigate the components involved. If the power supply of the LED neon sign is not CSA or cUL certified, the claim can be denied outright. Building owners and installers are then left personally liable for the full cost of damage and repairs.
-
3. Genuine Safety Hazards
Certification testing validates real-world safety: thermal performance under load, insulation integrity, short-circuit protection, and surge resistance. Products that skip this process may fail unpredictably — causing electrical fires, equipment damage, or risk to occupants. Certification is not a bureaucratic checkbox; it is evidence the product behaves safely under stress.
Provincial Safety Authorities & Recognized Approval Marks
Every province and territory in Canada enforces the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) — published by the CSA — through its own designated authority. All require electrical products to carry a recognized approval mark from an SCC-accredited certification body. CSA and cUL are accepted in every jurisdiction. See which certification is approved for your province below.
- Ontario — Electrical Safety Authority (ESA)
- British Columbia — Technical Safety BC
- Alberta — Safety Codes Council (Alberta Municipal Affairs)
- Quebec — Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ)
- Saskatchewan — Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK)
- Manitoba — Inspection and Technical Services (ITS), Manitoba Consumer Protection Office
- Nova Scotia — Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, Electrical Safety
