Not sure if you need an indoor or outdoor LED neon sign?

LED neon signs look similar indoors and out, but the differences in IP rating, power supply, mounting, and material matter — especially in Canada where weather conditions are demanding. This guide covers everything you need to know before choosing an indoor or outdoor LED neon sign.

At a glance

Outdoor LED Neon
Exposed environments
  • IP65 rated minimum — dust and rain resistant
  • Weatherproof power supply and sealed connections required
  • Corrosion-resistant mounting hardware
  • Rated for –20°C to +40°C (Canadian winters included)
  • Higher upfront cost; longer lifespan outdoors

Understanding IP ratings for LED neon signs

IP20
Indoor only
Protected against solid objects over 12mm. No moisture protection whatsoever.
Bedrooms, studios, offices
IP44
Splash resistant
Protected against solid objects over 1mm and water splashing from any direction.
Bathrooms, kitchens, patios
IP65
Outdoor standard
Fully dust-tight and protected against low-pressure water jets. The minimum rating for outdoor LED neon in Canada.
Nightglow outdoor signs
IP67
Submersion resistant
Fully dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion up to 1 metre for 30 minutes.
Flood-prone or coastal areas
IP68
Continuous submersion
Highest rating — fully dust-tight and rated for continuous underwater use beyond 1 metre.
Specialty / industrial only

Factor Indoor LED Neon Outdoor LED Neon
Protection & Weather Resistance
IP rating IP20 (standard indoor) — no moisture protection IP65 minimum — dust-tight and rain resistant
Rain resistance None — must be kept dry Rated for direct rain and low-pressure water jets
Snow & ice Not suitable for any exposure Rated for Canadian winter conditions down to –20°C
UV resistance Standard silicone — may yellow over time in sunlight UV-stabilised silicone maintains colour in direct sun
Wind & vibration Not rated for wind exposure Flexible silicone absorbs vibration; mounting hardware rated for wind load
Power & Electrical
Power supply type Standard indoor-rated 12V or 24V DC transformer Weatherproof (IP65+) sealed power supply required
Voltage Both use low-voltage DC (12V or 24V) — safe for plug-in use
cUL certification cUL-certified power supplies available — required by most Canadian landlords and insurers cUL-certified weatherproof power supplies available for outdoor installs
Power consumption Comparable — typically 10–25W depending on sign size; outdoor signs may draw slightly more due to longer runs
Installation type Plug-in (standard outlet); hardwiring optional Plug-in to weatherproof outlet, or hardwired by a licensed electrician (required in BC for hardwired installs)
Mounting & Installation
Mounting hardware Standard acrylic backing, wall anchors, or hanging wire Corrosion-resistant stainless or galvanized hardware; sealed cable entry points
Surface compatibility Drywall, wood, brick, acrylic — most interior surfaces Brick, concrete, metal, wood — all standard exterior surfaces; sealant required around entry points
Permit requirements Generally not required for plug-in indoor signs Sign permits required in most BC municipalities before installation; Vancouver By-law No. 11879 applies
Professional install needed Most indoor signs are DIY-friendly with plug-in power Hardwired outdoor installs require a Technical Safety BC–registered electrician
Appearance & Customization
Colour options Full range — all colours and RGB options available Most colours available; some specialty finishes are indoor-only
Backing options Clear, black, white, or mirrored acrylic; wood; custom shapes Clear or black acrylic (sealed); metal backing available for heavy-duty installs
Size limits No practical size limits for indoor use Larger signs may require structural assessment and additional mounting points
Cost & Longevity
Upfront cost Lower — standard components and hardware Higher — weatherproof power supply, sealed connections, and corrosion-resistant hardware add cost
Lifespan 50,000+ hours in a clean indoor environment 50,000+ hours; UV-stabilised materials resist degradation better long-term outdoors
Maintenance Wipe clean as needed; no special maintenance Periodic inspection of seals and mounting hardware recommended, especially after harsh winters

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an indoor LED neon sign on a covered patio?
It depends on how sheltered the space is. A fully covered patio with no direct rain exposure may be fine with an IP44-rated sign. For any space with even occasional moisture exposure, we recommend IP65 as a minimum. If in doubt, choose outdoor-rated — it costs a little more but lasts significantly longer.
What IP rating do I need for outdoor signage in Canada?
IP65 is the standard minimum for outdoor LED neon signs in Canada. It protects against rain, dust, and the freeze-thaw cycles common in BC winters. IP67 or higher is only needed for signs in flood-prone areas or locations subject to high-pressure washing.
Do outdoor LED neon signs work in cold weather?
Yes. Nightglow's outdoor signs are rated for temperatures down to –20°C, which covers most Canadian winter conditions. The flexible silicone tubing maintains its shape and brightness in cold weather without cracking.
Do I need a permit for an outdoor LED neon sign in BC?
In most BC municipalities, yes — a sign permit is required before installation, not after. In Vancouver, the Sign By-law No. 11879 governs outdoor signage. Fines apply for unpermitted signs. Nightglow recommends checking with your local municipality before installing any exterior sign.
Can any LED neon sign be converted from indoor to outdoor use?
Not reliably. Indoor signs use standard silicone and non-weatherproof power supplies that aren't rated for moisture or UV exposure. The safest approach is to order an outdoor-rated sign from the start. Nightglow can advise on the right spec when you request your free mockup.
Bottom line: If your sign will be exposed to rain, snow, direct sun, or temperature extremes, always choose an IP65-rated outdoor LED neon sign with a weatherproof power supply. Indoor signs are not designed for outdoor conditions and will fail prematurely. Not sure which applies to your space?
